Chapter 16
The world around us fell still. The wizardâs head laid a few feet from his body on the ground, but I could still feel the rage that coursed through me. It took me a few deep breaths to calm myself down enough to even look out at the rest of my party.
I saw matching sets of wide, shocked eyes at the blood that still dripped from the bladed end of my scythe, but I felt no remorse as I gave it a quick shake. He deserved it anyway.
The sound of XP popping from the fight and finishing the quest filled the air and broke some of the tension that hung over us like a shroud. There were two chests left in the debris from the battle. One sat where Yevenâs now headless body was spread across the ground, and the other was situated between where the two remaining pillars had once stood, before the Cronenberg creature had exploded in their midst.
I glanced over at the chests, but I couldnât find the energy within myself to go and grab them. At least, I couldnât at the moment, and so I dropped down onto the ground and gave a heavy, tired sigh. Who would have thought that chopping off a wizardâs head was exhausting?
It was as if my own need for rest let the rest of my party know that it was okay if they sat down, too, and soon, all five of us were sprawled on the cracked and charred stone floor of the wizardâs tower while a Healing Wave pumped through us.
It was one of the first fights, if not the first fight, where all of us had taken more damage than Iâd have liked to admit. Even my pets had taken more damage than they had in the past. Weâd still come out on top, but I could see why so many other parties had failed against Yeven and his creepy metal body suit.
âThat sucked,â Milo succinctly summed up the situation.
I snorted in agreement. It wasnât our cleanest victory by any stretch of the imagination. But a victory was a victory.
âWe still won, though,â Sinead pointed out. âAnd look.â
The Cleric pointed a tired finger toward one of the many, many holes that we had blown through the side of the tower. It took me a moment to realize what it was she was even pointing at, because there was nothing there.
And then it struck me. There was nothing there. The smoke that had filled the sky like ink from the bellows of the monster factory was no longer sluicing through the air. Weâd done it.
We had turned the factoryâs power off.
It was only one victory of two, but I still felt a thrilling surge of pride as it ballooned up in my chest. Weâd done something that so many other people hadnât been able to do, and we had all survived.
Speaking of survivalâ¦
I looked over at Ivy and studied the Mage carefully. Her long red hair was knotted
